Something For The Weekend: Update!

This weekend I am going to be moving the blog over to Tumblr, because I use it more and generally prefer the format. I think I'll be more motivated to update if it's all in one place. This blog will remain here because I'm not going to be moving every single post over.
So, bare with me!

Update!

I have been AWOL, for which I apologise. I could give you a long list of excuses (I've been busy focusing on my project, editing one of my novels, helping a friend edit their novel, my rat has been sick and required lots of attention, blogger went a bit weird on me...) but let's just say I'm sorry and I'll be getting back on track soon!

I want to shake up the blog a bit more, make it more personal, maybe vlog a bit...who knows!

TGIF: Quotes That Make You Swoon

Quotes That Make You Swoon: What are some of the most swoon-worthy quotes you've experienced in a book?

I'm not the sort of person who remembers quotes so this is a toughy! First, a poem:

“Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.

Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.

The pines were roaring on the height,
The wind was moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.

The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon's ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!”
- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

“Love is the kind of thing that's already happening by the time you notice it, that's how it works, and no matter how old you get, that doesn't change. Except that you can break it up into two entirely distinct types -- love where there's an end in sight and love where there isn't.” - Banana Yoshimoto, Goodbye Tsugumi

“Each one of us continues to carry the heart of each self we've ever been, at every stage along the way, and a chaos of everything good and rotten. And we have to carry this weight all alone, through each day that we live. We try to be as nice as we can to the people we love, but we alone support the weight of ourselves.” - Banana Yoshimoto, Goodbye Tsugumi

“What is honor compared to a woman's love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms . . . or the memory of a brother's smile? Wind and words. Wind and words. We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy.” - George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

“I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now...Come further up, come further in!” - C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle

This isn't from a book but is too lovely not to include:

“The best fantasy is written in the language of dreams. It is alive as dreams are alive, more real than real ... for a moment at least ... that long magic moment before we wake.
Fantasy is silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli. Reality is plywood and plastic, done up in mud brown and olive drab. Fantasy tastes of habaneros and honey, cinnamon and cloves, rare red meat and wines as sweet as summer. Reality is beans and tofu, and ashes at the end. Reality is the strip malls of Burbank, the smokestacks of Cleveland, a parking garage in Newark. Fantasy is the towers of Minas Tirith, the ancient stones of Gormenghast, the halls of Camelot. Fantasy flies on the wings of Icarus, reality on Southwest Airlines. Why do our dreams become so much smaller when they finally come true?
We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think. To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever somewhere south of Oz and north of Shangri-La.
They can keep their heaven. When I die, I'd sooner go to middle Earth.” - George R.R. Martin

From The Review Pile: Pushing The Limits

Pushing the Limits
Pushing The Limits by Katie McGarry
Whoops! I meant to do this yesterday. Better late than never?

This arrived the other day and while reading the press release I have to say that some parts sound great and some parts not so much. The cover doesn't grab me at all, but I've said before that I just don't like covers with people on them very much, and the tag line isn't exactly inspired but it's not awful either. I also don't like when things are described as "insert title here meets other title", it just doesn't really say anything to me.

Anyway, I'm being picky. The story itself does sound pretty interesting and I do like stories about characters from backgrounds that you don't see very often, in this case therapy. But there are some other points that I find a little lacklustre. The bad boy thing has been done so many times before and I hope that Katie McGarry puts an interesting spin on things. I know that teenage girls tend to adore the idea of bad boys but surely even they get tired of reading about them over and over again?

It is sold as "dealing sensitively with gritty themes of loss, love and change...a deeply compelling novel which challenges readers to abandon preconceptions and reconsider what 'normal' means" which does sound really good so hopefully it lives up to expectations! I am looking forward to reading it because overall it sounds very intriguing.

From Goodreads:
"I won't tell anyone, Echo. I promise." Noah tucked a curl behind my ear. It had been so long since someone touched me like he did. Why did it have to be Noah Hutchins? His dark brown eyes shifted to my covered arms. "You didn't do that-did you? It was done to you?" No one ever asked that question. They stared. They whispered. They laughed. But they never asked.
So wrong for each other...and yet so right.
No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

Page Turners: Girly

I am currently reading:
Girly by Josh Lesnick
Comics 247 - 503. This is from the Complete Collection that my fiancé bought when Josh Lesnick published the entire comic through Kickstarter, we also got the limited edition statue! I love Girly, it's a weird comic but it's super funny. As long as you're not offended by NSFW humour, same-sex relationships and obscure humour, you'll enjoy it.

Um...I can't really give a blurb because it's part of a long running series, so here's the blurb from the first book, from Goodreads:
Because you demanded it - Josh Lesnick's popular web comic strip is collected in handy graphic novel form Girly follows the adventures of Otra and Winter, a romantic odd couple living in Cute-Town. When Otra isn't busy shooting people into space, she reluctantly acts as Winter's "sidekick" - completely against her will. Wacky comedy, tender romance and surreal oddness abound in this hilarious and off-beat strip
